Violence in Guatemala: Daniel LeClair's story ›
I wish I could say this is madly exagerated, but sadly it is not. Things like these happen every single day. We’ve passed paranoia and uncertainty and I guess just become resigned and inmune to death and violence. Why? Why should we resign and just accept this as our fate?
A couple of days ago someone was shot a couple of blocks to my office. I drove by minutes after it happened and I saw the body of the the poor guy that had been shot dead on the wheel, waiting for the scene to be proccessed. All I could think of was, “oh, hey, another guy was shot.” No OMFG, WTF DID I JUST SEE?! or anything. Just a shrug and a small prayer, and to carry on. It didn’t hit me after a while that it was a very sad thing that the image I had seen had not bothered me at all. It’s kind of become familiar in here. Ugh.
That’s Guatemala City these days for you. One of the world’s ten most violent and dangerous cities. Please, somebody get me out of here.
